István Hegedűs is the chairman of the Hungarian Europe Society, a Budapest-based NGO focusing especially on European Union issues. He became a liberal member of the first free elected Hungarian Parliament in 1990 and also served as the vice-chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee. He received his PhD in sociology at Corvinus University of Budapest in 2004. Amongst others, he had courses as a free-lanced scholar and lecturer the University of California located at the Eötvös Loránd University of Sciences in Budapest.
