Biography

Hilary Pilkington is Professor of Sociology at the University of Manchester and Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences. She has long standing research interest in youth and youth subculture, youth political participation, activism and extremism, ethnographic research methods and meta-ethnographic synthesis. She was the coordinator of the FP7 MYPLACE project on youth participation and civic engagement and currently coordinates the H2020 DARE (Dialogue about Radicalisation and Equality) project (http://www.dare-h2020.org/). She is a member of the Expert Group of the Commission for Countering Extremism and has recently served as independent Commissioner on the Greater Manchester Combined Authority Preventing Hateful Extremism and Promoting Cohesion Commission.
