LECTURE: What do European Teenagers fear? – Lessons from the ICCS Study
Hermann J. Abs, University of Duisburg-Essen & Ellen Claes, KU Leuven
The lecture will introduce the International Civic and Citizenship Education Study (ICCS 2016), which is the only representative international comparison on democratic citizenship education in school. Dimensions of the civic mindset – as attitudes, knowledge, identification, and participation – will be seen in the social and educational context.
The presentation will ask, in how far ICCS 2016 captures global challenges as represented in the United Nations sustainable development goals (SDG, especially SDG 4.7). It will question what the core measurements can be for citizenship education from a globalized perspective.
Specific importance is given to the fears and future expectations of 14-year-olds as a precondition and starting point for educational processes. The presenters would very much like to integrate the experience of the audience on how to deal with imagined future in citizenship education.
